Raising Eco-Conscious Kids

At Tribe Azul we are all about family and creating a sustainable future for our kids, grandkids and future generations. Sustainable living is essential to the future of the planet but we also need to be talking to our kids about it; raising eco-conscious kids who will grow up to respect and protect the planet. We want to discuss some simple but effective ways kids can be eco-conscious in their day-to-day lives. It’s easier than you may think and every action, big or small makes a huge difference.

One way to talk to our kids about being eco-conscious is discuss saving water. We can do this by talking to them about taking shorter showers or showing them they can turn off the faucet while they brush their teeth. These everyday tasks done right can make a world of difference, especially when our kids are doing it alongside us.

Recycling is also a great way to teach our children about protecting the planet. Let them know that we can recycle our plastic, cardboard, and our cans. Have them think about the disposable water bottles you may have around the house, show them how those can easily be recycled. There are also many great books out there for kids about recycling. Some of our favorites are:

- What A Waste: Trash, Recycling and Protecting our Planet - by Jess French

- The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle (Little Green Books)

- Not for me, please! I choose to act green by Marria Godsey & Christopher J Kellner

Next, have them think about their cereal boxes, old school papers, and the boxes from crayons or markers, show them that those, can also be recycled. Make it fun and see what they can make out of those old boxes and papers.

Addressing pollution can seem like a hard task but it doesn’t have to be! Explaining to our kids where pollution stems from is a great place to start! We can share that pollution is basically when there are harmful “pollutants” being pushed into the planet by unnatural sources, like factories and cars but that we can reduce this pollution when we do things like carpool.

There are some great books by Little Green Books that address for kids the impacts of pollution and climate change such as: 'The Polar Bears' Home'.

It is important to teach our kids about animal protection. Animals in our oceans and on our lands. They play a big role in the health of our planet and it wouldn’t be the same here on Earth if they were no longer a part of it. Some of the animals we highlight in our kids' organic cotton clothing are the hummingbird (here), the rhino (here), the whale (here).  A fun way to teach our kids about animal protection is to read them a book, about endangered animals (here) or the Balance of All Living Things (here).

We can teach our kids that everyday is earth day.
